Biochemistry

The Biochemistry section of clinical laboratory sciences is composed of several courses , the outcome of which , culminate in enabling the student to perform and analyze data of various biochemical assays used to diagnose diseases affecting various organs , tissue , and systems of human body. The biochemical basis of disease has gained much emphasis during the last decades and has become a focal and integral part of the overall diagnostic process. More recently Molecular Biology . This field has proved to be very useful as it deals with illustrating genetic mutations that give rise to disease.

The Biochemistry courses at the CLS department are of clinical nature . The graduate student of this department is not merely a technician or technologist able to analyze the biochemical content of biological fluid. He/ she will have accumulated enough biochemical & physiological scientific knowledge that will enable him/ her to set up biochemical assays of a variety of parameters from scratch. Furthermore the graduate will be able to analyze , interpret , and correlate results leading to the diagnosis & prognosis of disease.

The following is a complete of Biochemistry courses offered to the CLS student . The courses are listed in the order taken and include a brief description of contents:-

  • CLS 231 : Clinical Analytical Chemistry ( 2 Lectures , 1 lab session / week).
  • CLS 232 : Clinical Biochemistry I (3 Lectures , 1 lab session / week ).
  • CLS 331 : Clinical Biochemistry II , prerequisite is CLS 232 ( 3 Lecture , 1 lab session / week).
  • CLS 332 : Instrumental Analysis , prerequisite is CLS 231 (3 Lecture , 1 lab session / week).
  • CLS 333 : Clinical Biochemistry III , prerequisite is CLS 331 ( 3 Lecture , 1 lab session / week).
  • CLS 431 : Clinical Enzymology, prerequisite is CLS 333 ( 1 Lecture , 1 lab session / week).
  • CLS 432 : Clinical Practice in Biochemistry , prerequisite is CLS 431 ( 1 Lecture , 1 lab session / week).
