Microbiology

Microbiology is a broad term which includes the study of virology, mycology, parasitology, bacteriology and other branches.
The word Microbiology originates from Greek : mīkros, "small"; bios, "life"; and -logia, “study”. It is the study of microorganisms, which are unicellular or cell-cluster microscopic organisms. This includes eukaryote such as fungi and protists, and prokaryotes, which are bacteria and archaea. Viruses, though not strictly classed as living organisms, are also studied. In short; microbiology refers to the study of life and organisms that are too small to be seen with the naked eye. Previously ‘Immunology’ dealt mostly with the study of the immune response to infectious diseases and was studied under the umbrella of Microbiology. Even though Immunology is a broader subject now, it is still grouped with the microbiology subjects, particularly at undergraduate level.
