This course aims to equip entry level postgraduate students with advanced concepts in haemopoiesis and disorders of blood cells. In particular, pathophysiology and laboratory diagnostic workup of red blood cells disorders, malignant white cells disorders, and hemostasis disorders will be introduced. The course aims also to provide students with the essential knowledge and skills required to competently undertake specialized haematological investigations of haematological disorders in clinical settings.

In this course the student will be familiar with the specialized techniques and principles related to blood transfusion. Students will be familiar with and learn through the investigations of incompatible blood and blood products transfusion. It also covers the basic aspects of sample processing, results interpretation, and troubleshooting.

This course provides comprehensive knowledge about antimicrobial therapy and antimicrobial resistance mechanisms. The course also demonstrates laboratory methods and molecular techniques for antimicrobial resistance.

This course aims to equip postgraduate students with advanced concepts in molecular biology and laboratory diagnostic workup of malignant white cell disorders. The course aims also to provide students with essential knowledge and skills required to competently undertake specialized hematological investigation of hematological malignancies in clinical settings. The course will be (2+1=3) credit hours in which there are 2 contact hours for lectures and one credit hour for practical session including hospital visits of specialized flow cytometry and molecular cytogenetics and genetics labs.

This course will cover the basic molecular abnormalities of inheritance, and the normal and abnormal structures and functions of variant hemoglobin’s specifically sickle cell diseases, thalassemia, and other haemoglobinopathies. Abnormalities of red cell enzymes, specifically G6PD enzyme and pyruvate kinase enzyme deficiencies will be highlighted. Mention will be made of Hexokinases and Glutathione reductase enzymes. Emphasis will also be laid on diagnostic criteria including the basic hematological diagnosis and more specific and more modern diagnostic tests including Hemoglobin Electrophoresis, Hemoglobin peptide digestion and chain analysis, Haplotype determination, and enzyme electrophoresis and assay.

The purpose of this course is to provide students with advance understanding of quality management systems and the ever-increasing focus on quality in healthcare. It describes a plan for managing the quality of laboratory’s test results and services using the Quality System Essentials (QSEs). This course introduces students to quality system model that can be applied directly to clinical laboratories.

The course provides students with the basis for understanding the concepts required to success in using computers practically in healthcare environment. It also covers new applications of computer and informatics in healthcare field.

The course covers various topics in Statistics. It starts with introduction to Bio-Statistics, types of data and graphical representation. Then, it moves to Descriptive Statistics, which includes Measures of Central Tendency (Mean, median, mode) and Measures of Dispersion (Range, Standard deviation, coefficient of variation). After, it introduces Probabilities in detail. Types of random variables then are considered with some statistical distributions and Statistical Inference. Finally, describes regression analysis and analysis of variance (ANOVA) with applying these concepts using statistical software’s such as R, Minitab, Excel, Matlab and SPSS in medical field.

This course covers major and most updated scientific published publications important in CLS/clinical health diagnostics and research. The students will be guided to grasp the knowledge for selecting high caliber publications and discussion of the subject matter through critical analysis, and be enabled/encouraged to practice it by presenting in the presence of audience to reflect the level of learning progress.

The main purpose of this course is to provide the students with skills required to plan, conduct, analyze, and present the findings of the research conducted. They will learn to write a professional research thesis, use library resources and search engines to find suitable journals and articles relevant to their work and extract important information from these. This course will also provide a platform for students to understand the importance of different types of scientific researches and methods of analysis of data. At the end of this course, students should be able to demonstrate the skills required to develop a research proposal, conduct the practical work for the proposed research, assimilate the results, prepare the dissertation of the research conducted and present their findings.

This course provides an overview of biosecurity/biosafety and the practices, equipment, and facilities for the safe and secure handling of dangerous pathogens in a medical laboratory setting. It is intended for all students looking for or in a medical research, routine hospital laboratory, and any other forms of career that require working in a wet medical laboratory

In this course students work on a research project during the whole semester. Emphasis is placed on efficient utilization of scientific and medical databases, scientific writing, and critical thinking skills. The research project culminates with a written scientific report, an oral defense, and a formal research presentation approved by a judging committee.
